Choosing the Right Method for Each Media Type
The most common failure in data destruction is not a weak method. It is one method applied to every media type in the load. Spinning disks, solid state drives, backup tape and optical media behave completely differently, and a process that treats them identically will do a thorough job on some and nothing useful on others.
The reference framework is NIST SP 800-88, which separates sanitisation into three levels — Clear (overwrite, protects against software recovery), Purge (infeasible to recover even in a laboratory) and Destroy (media physically rendered unusable). The right level depends on the media and on what happens to the device next, not on how sensitive the data feels.
